80-Core Programmable Processor First to Deliver Teraflops Performance

Intel Corporation researchers have developed the world’s first programmable processor that delivers supercomputer-like performance from a single, 80-core chip not much larger than the size of a finger nail while using less electricity than most of today’s home appliances.

Since dual-core and quad-core chips were introduced to the market in the past year, looking forward to an 80-core chip is a major departure from the expected natural progression in microprocessors.

Manny Vara, a technology strategist with Intel's R&D labs, says the 80-core chip uses less than 100 watts of energy; a dual-core chip uses 60 to 70 watts and a quad-core uses 105 to 130 watts. Of course the numbers for the 80-core chip could be affected by the fact that it's lacking some functionality, but Rob Enderle, president and principal analyst of the Enderle Group, says it's still a significant accomplishment.

While it may take five to eight years to come out with a working 80-core chip, Vara says IT managers might start watching for what he calls "different flavors" of quad-core chips. "Maybe you'll have interim chips where they have more complex cores along with simpler cores, too."

Software patch could improve car engine efficiency upto 2.6%

Many modern cars could reduce fuel consumption by 2.6% simply by uploading new software to the engine's computer, a Dutch scientist claims.

"Just by adding a piece of software and a simple cable, cars can save 2.6% of fuel consumption," John Kessels at the University of Eindhoven says. The same approach is already used to improve the efficiency of many hybrid vehicles.

The software is not proprietary to Ford and can be used in any vehicle with an engine computer, which includes the vast majority of cars sold today, Kessel says. However, the software is not quite ready for release. "We don't yet know how much it might degrade the battery," he adds.

A more significant fuel saving of 5% to 6% could be achieved if the car engine itself were to be rapidly switched on and off, but this would mean serious adjustments to the engine, including the addition of a powerful starter motor to ensure the car gets going quickly after each engine shutdown.

The researchers from the University of Rochester in New York found that people who play video games for a few hours a day over the course of a month can improve certain aspects of their vision by about 20 percent.

Visually complex games improve the vision more than the less complex ones. In the research, they have made one group of students to play Unreal Tournament (Complex one) and another group to play Tetris (a damn simple one). And it has been found the group that was playing Unreal Tournament showed better results.

Apple gets a bigger pie with its iPhone

Analysts have worked out calculations that reveal us how much Apple would be getting out its iPhone.

The 4GB model costs $499 in retail and it is estimated that it costs only $245.83, which means Apple has 49.3 percent into it wallet.
The 8GB model costs $599 in retails, is manufactured at the cost of $264.85, getting Apple 46.9 percent into it's wallet.

This does not include cost of priceless creativity of the Apple people. Anyway the news is Apple's wallet is getting bigger and bigger.

Apple has not yet started selling iPhones, but there are zillions of news and rumors around. Seems that Apple first approached Verizon Wireless, but a deal could not be reached by them. Know what Apple demanded? It wanted higher control of its iPhone Users in Content-Distribution and Support. And Verizon did not want anyone to be between them and their customers.
Apple approached Cingular, with a bit of lesser demands, which the latter found mutually beneficial and so the deal has been signed.

And hey there have been rumours that Google is planning to design a mobile with Samsung. The name that has been doing rounds is "Google Switch". But there has no reports from either side.

700 kms per litre

Such a headline would never miss to grab your attention.. Well it is actually 700 kms at the cost of 1 litre of petrol. And believe it is not research, this Battery powered BIKE is already in market.

It does have its share of minuses - Max Speed < 25km/hr .. So it might mean we may not blaze(?) at speeds more than 20-22 km/hr.. that'll be fine if you are moving around TNagar most of the time, but otherwise it sounds crazy..

And with a Full Charge of the Battery (takes around 8 hrs for a recharge) , you can go upto 70-75 kms. This should not be big hurdle.. we can go around for around 4 days with a single full recharge and then charge it the next night.

Think we still remember Reva Electric Cars. The concept was good. But look at the car.. Does it look anywhere near ok.. The design and the aesthetics were too poor. . Heard they are getting in big investments (they are nowhere near break-even) .. Hope they give us a better product next time.

Mallu Movies

Having almost completed the first full version of GlobalBusinessPages.com, I watched a few Malayalam movies this week.. All of them were good movies. Clean entertainers. Cinematography is astounding in every movie.
And "Thanmathra" keeps me saying woowwww.. A wonderful movie - fine script n screenplay - gr8 direction ( Blessy is his name, I suppose) - And acting .. Mohanlal is the super actor of India next only to Kamal Sir (no one can beat the master).. After seeing the movie a couple of days back, I watched twice the last night..
